The three great gangsters of pre-Code Hollywood — Edward G. Robinson (Little Caesar), James Cagney (The Public Enemy) and Paul Muni (Scarface) — were all in movies about Chicago, but they had all come out of the Lower East Side. Only Cagney had been born there, son of an Irish bartender….
